CBD has become a trending topic in the past couple years as a way to have a natural treatment for various ailments, including sleep, but without using an illegal substance (depending where you live) like THC. Cannabidiol does come from the hemp plant, but it doesn’t get you high and is legal in most states without the THC content in it. There have been many studies performed on sleep and CBD on rats, but 2 studies are of particular significance.
There are No Acute Effects on the Sleep Wake Cycle
This first study, presented by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, was performed in Brazil with 70 final participants in the study. It was looking at the effects of cannabidiol on the sleep-wake cycle specifically, so look at exactly how (and if) CBD helps with sleep.
This was a double-blind study that did use placebos to see the effectiveness of the CBD versus the placebo. The results were pretty clear that there is no indication that CBD affects the sleep cycle.
Using CBD Oil for Anxiety and Stress Relief
This next study looks at using CBD to help treat anxiety. The results of the neurotherapeutics study showed that many of the participants of this study did notice a decrease in their anxiety and stress symptoms, including stress-induced anxiety.
You will notice that in the results, many participants reported having a more relaxed and calming state when using CBD, as opposed to before when they were not using it.
What These Studies Tell You
As with many natural and alternative treatments, studies will show that some participants have good luck, and some don’t. While it is true that CBD most likely does not affect your sleep cycle, it might help sleep in other ways.
If you struggle with sleep from an anxiety disorder, you may be able to treat your anxiety, and then hopefully be able to fall asleep a little easier. CBD is also known to create an overall calming effect, which can reduce stress and encourage better sleep.
Researchers continue to look at CBD and its effects both on humans and rats, not just for sleep but for many of the other supposed health benefits. Since it is safe to use and legal in most states of the U.S., it really doesn’t hurt to try it out if you are interested in looking for an alternative treatment for your sleep issues.
